A few Fridays ago, I walked into a room of forty New Orleans locals who meet once a month to talk about AI. I found out about it from my own AI. It showed up in the daily briefing I set up for myself in Claude.

I tell you that because a year ago I would have rolled my eyes at that sentence. I'm not a programmer. My career has gone from post-Katrina real estate development, to raising my family, to digital marketing, to teaching AI. Every one of those chapters taught me the same thing: the people who get results aren't the ones with the fanciest tools. They're the ones who know how to ask.

That's what this post is about. Not which AI to use. How to talk to the one you already have.

Why your AI answers feel generic

Most of us type into AI the way we type into Google. A few words, a question mark, enter.

"Write an email about my new service."

And AI does exactly what you asked. It writes an email. A bland, could-be-anyone email, because you gave it nothing to work with.

Here's the shift: AI isn't a search engine. It's closer to a very fast, very capable new assistant on their first day. They don't know your business, your clients, or your voice yet. The quality of what you get back depends almost entirely on the quality of your brief.

The good news? If you've ever briefed a contractor, trained a new hire, or sent work back because it missed the mark, you already have this skill. You just need a simple structure for it.

The TALK method

T: Tell it who it is. Give AI a role. "Act as a communications assistant for a small business." "You are an experienced real estate marketing writer." A role sets the expertise, vocabulary, and point of view.

A: Aim at the outcome. Say what done looks like. Not "write an email," but "write a 120-word email to past clients announcing my new service, ready to send."

L: Lay out the details. Audience, tone, length, what to include, what to avoid. "Warm and confident, no hype. Mention that sessions are virtual or in person in New Orleans. End with one clear next step."

K: Keep the conversation going. Your first answer is a draft, not the final word. "Make it shorter." "Warmer." "Sound more like me, here's an example of how I write." This is the step most people skip, and it's where the magic is.

Before and after

Before: Write an email about my new service.

After: Act as a communications assistant for a small business (T). Write a 120-word email to past clients announcing my new 1:1 AI session (A). Warm, confident, no hype. Mention it's 60 minutes, virtual or in person in New Orleans. End with one clear next step (L).

Then: Make the opening line more personal (K).

The second prompt takes about 20 more seconds to write. It saves 20 minutes of rewriting.

3 prompts you can copy today

  1. The hard message: Act as a diplomatic communicator. Help me write a kind but clear message to [person] about [situation]. I want to keep the relationship strong and be direct about [the issue].

  2. Your own voice: Here are three things I've written that sound like me: [paste]. Describe my writing style in five bullet points. Then rewrite the draft below in that style: [paste draft]

  3. Learn anything faster: Act as a patient teacher. Explain [topic] to me like I'm a smart professional who's new to it. Use one everyday example, then give me three questions to check my understanding.

Start with one

Don't try all three today. Pick the one that matches a task you're already avoiding, run it, then keep the conversation going until the draft sounds like you. That's the whole method.
